Introduction and Brief History |
To quote Wikipedia's main Rotary entry:
"Rotary International is an international service organization whose stated human rights purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and to advance goodwill and peace around the world. It is a secular organization open to all people regardless of race, color, creed, religion, gender, or political preference." |

The first Rotary Club was formed in Chicago in 1906. Its meeting place rotated between offices of the initial members - hence the name and the "Rotary Wheel" symbol, which has appeared in many pictorial forms. The basic design - 24 cogs, 6 spokes and a central "keyway" - was standardised in 1923, and it is reputedly one of the world's best-recognised and trusted brands. |

The idea (and ideals) spread rapidly through the USA - a National Association was soon formed, and clubs were established in Canada, England and elsewhere. With the club count approaching 200, the governing association became Rotary International in 1922, headquartered in north Chicago where it remains today. |

The movement's growth has continued ever since. RI's website currently reports over 33,000 clubs in over 200 countries with1.2 million members - all subscribing to the same objectives and participating in common projects. |

Thornbury Rotary Club are pleased to continue supporting this charity by collecting small tools for onward shipment to Africa where local charitable organisations provide support, in a practical way, to artisans and craft workers in some of the poorest parts of the world. We are looking for simple tools for carpentry, building, engineering and electrical repair work. Also included in this list are Kitchen ware such as cake tins and cooking utensils
