The Youth Committee is specifically responsible for supporting projects
focussed on the young people of our community, by working through and with schools
and youth organisations. |
The annual "Youth Speaks" competition promotes the art of public speaking by Primary school-children.
Each school runs its own competition, usually among its last-year
children. Two Club members and one of the school's
teachers judge the competitors and select a winner to compete in the
grand inter-school final. Many of the Thornbury District
primary schools already enter every year, and the competition is
open to all.
Thornbury, with other Bristol Clubs, also promotes musical per- formance by
running the "Young Musician" competition. Soloists |

on any instrument are invited to enter. There are a number of heats around
the Bristol area and the grand final is usually held at Bristol Grammar School. |

The Club has played a full role in Rotary's "Kids Out" movement since it
began 10 years ago. Originally started as a local initiative in
Liverpool, it rapidly grew to a national Rotary event thanks to the generous support of Littlewoods.
Disadvantaged and disabled children and their carers are given a day out and a
break from their usual routine.
In
2000, the Thornbury Club organised an event at Westernbirt Arboretum
for 1500 children and carers, complete with fair- ground, sideshows,
clowns and the Rolls Royce Spitfire. |
