Rotary International Programmes: Call Meeting
Rotary provides many opportunities for members, individually or collectively, to advance the international objective. In recent years, Thornbury Rotary has:
  ■   Been the sponsoring Club for funding of several aid projects through Rotary International's Matching  Grant programme, most notably the construction of an earth dam in northern Kenya  by the "Wishing For A Well" charity to provide clean water.
The Manzui Earth Catchment Dam (right) provides water for 840 families - 4500 adults and children - who previously walked many miles each day to and from the nearest well. It is hoped that another dam will be

  constructed by the Brian Cooper and his team during 2007, co-funded by our French "twin", the Rotary Club of Barbezieux, the  Machakos (Kenya) Club, and by the Rotary Foundation.
  ■   Sponsored a number of local graduate students who won Rotary Fellowship awards to study in overseas Universities.
  ■   Participated in the Group Study Exchange programme, in which groups of young local professionals exchange visits with groups from a different country to learn how their opposites work, live and learn.  In 2006 the Club provided the group leader for an exchange with Indian counterparts.
  ■   Raised for for the purchase of a number of emergency aid boxes, which are stored nationally and can be shipped to disaster areas at very short notice. In 2005/6 several Shelter Boxes were provided by the Club for the Tsunami and Earthquake emergencies, with the assistance of Tesco Thornbury and the generosity of the community
  ■   Participated in many other International programmes, including Vision Aid (collection and refurbishment of spectacles) and Tools For Self-Reliance (collection and refurbishment of workshop tools), both of which benefit third-world countries.
