"Youth Speaks" Competition, 2008 |
|
Rebekah Gatling (pictured left with President Ray), representing Manorbrook Primary School
is the 2008 Rotary "Youth Speaks" champion. She beat competitors from nine other
local schools to win a £50 book token, and ensure that the school retained the Ron Nicholas Cup for the
year. Rebekah's talk was entitled "The Girl Guides" |
|
Rotary promotes its "Youth Speaks" competition to help the development of children by
encouraging them to develop the capability of public speaking, so as to provide them
with valuable skills and self-confidence for the future. |
|
The annual competition is open to Years 5 or 6 pupils of schools in the Thornbury area.
Rotarians offer their assistance to help schools organise
internal competitions to select their winner, who goes forward
to the annual Grand Final. |
|
In second place was Thomas Bailey from St Helens Primary talking about “Flying” and
third was Chloe Dawes of Olveston Cof E School who talked about “the Disease Sarcoids and my pony”. |
 |
|
All ten entrants (pictured left) were, of course, winners, having won their school heats to get
to the Grand Final. Every competitor in every heat was presented with an illustrated
dictionary by the Rotary Club |
|
The Ron Nicholas Cup is named in honour of the lifetime commitment and work for
Rotary International of Thornbury Rotary Club’s late member, Ron Nicholas.
Ron’s widow, Carmel was present at the Grand Final. |
Heats for the 2009 competition will be held during the 2009 summer term, and
the Grand final will be in early July.
The competition will be open to all children in the Thornbury area in year 5/6
for the school year 2009-2009. |
