The Rotary club of Thornbury has been very active in the local area in recent months. Possibly you will have seen us directing traffic during the Christmas Lights switch on and at the quarterly Food Fairs in Castle Street. We have used these opportunities to raise money to support local, national and international charities and other good causes. We also had several opportunities to fund raise at the Wyevale Garden Centre . However our main fund raising activity during the Rotary year is our Swimarathon - for more information see the front page of this website.
This Rotary year I am keen to support medical research as any advances in medical science will have a long lasting impact for both present and future generations. The 2 charities I have chosen are Cancer Research UK and Meningitis UK; a significant part of the proceeds from our Swimarathon will go to these charities. However we have spread our net much wider and, in recent months, we have made donations to the British Legion, the Fairbridge Trust, the NSPCC, the Friends of Gloucester Hospital, the Motor Neurone Disease Association and SAMS. Closer to home we have funded a participant in the Rotary Young Leaders Programme, and have provided a lunch (and entertainment) for a number of elderly people in the Thornbury area.
The polio plus campaign goes from strength to strength and, all being well, will be able to announce shortly that no new cases of polio have been reported in India in the last 12 months. This major success has been achieved by rotary clubs throughout the world working together.
