Kids Out
Introduction and history
Each year more than 20,000 children flee domestic abuse to seek sanctuary in refuge. Typically leaving home with only the clothes on their back, these children have experienced physical, emotional, and even sexual abuse and arrive at refuge with nothing. In collaboration with Women’s Aid, partner charities and corporate supporters, KidsOut works to remind these children and thousands of others living with disadvantages what it is like to be children and just have fun.
The first Rotary KidsOut National Day Out took place 25 years ago on the 13th June 1990 for only a couple hundred children. Organised by Kingston Rotary Club and Littlewoods organisation as a trial day, it proved so successful that the next year it was spread across the UK. Today KidsOut partners with Rotary to take more than 25,000 disadvantaged children on our National Day Out.
Today and Thornbury
As a part of the National KidsOut day held annually on the second Wednesday of June and supported by Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, Thornbury Rotary Club has for over 20 years taken part in the National KidsOut Day as one of its successful perennial projects. The day Nationally benefits some 25,000 children.
Thornbury Rotary has for many years worked with the staff and parents of New Siblands School to give all the students a stimulating visit at the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, Slimbridge. The W.W.T. staff are very keen and helpful. It must be noted that students unable to travel are provided with fun activities including bouncy castle, donkey rides and sensory play bus on the school site.
The day, as the reader may imagine, is a busy one taking a lot of advance preparation and on the day logistics, resulting in around 120 students plus staff and Rotarians taking part. Thornbury Rotarians and partners provide support and encouragement for the day’s activities and have a strong relationship with the school, they are very willing to make the day a success. Indeed, the day is such that it now forms a part of the school’s annual curriculum.
